Session description:
Currently, socio-economic development has brought extensive man-made transport infrastructures expansion (highway, railway, tunnel, etc.) in seasonally frozen regions. Engineering design, construction and maintenance in areas impacted by freeze-thaw cycles are faced with unique problems. How to cost-effectively and environmentally-friendly design, construct and maintain engineered infrastructures in seasonally frozen soil regions is a great challenge. Adaptive solutions and engineering methods have to be applied with increased care and meticulous planning.
In recent years, some major transportation networks, such as the Harbin-Dalian high-speed railway in Northeast China, have greatly promoted the research and practice of transport infrastructures and its countermeasures to seasonally frost hazards. In the future, with the implementation of China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative abroad, an increasing number of transport infrastructures will be built in seasonally frozen regions, such as the Moscow-Beijing railway and the Xinjiang-Pakistan transportation corridor. With the upgration of engineering grade, what we need to do on the engineering become more complicated and time- and cost-constrained.
Presenters are invited that provide insights into the current knowledge and experiences on geotechnical problems for transport infrastructures and its countermeasure in seasonally frozen regions, which are related to (1) geotechnical and mechanical characteristics of subgrade fills subjected to freeze-thaw cycles; (2) hydrothermal interactions between the transport infrastructures and seasonally freezing and thawing; (3) design and construction methods; (4) engineering problems and hazards; (5) adaptation strategies and solutions; (6) computer modelling; (7) case studies of seasonally frozen ground engineering, and so on.
