Session description:

This special session is being organized as a tribute to the life and accomplishments of our friend and colleague Professor Emeritus Hugh M. French (Canada) who passed away suddenly in May 2019. Hugh published on a wide variety of subjects during his 50-year career, including ground ice, thermokarst processes, solifluction, pingos, Quaternary periglacial environments and deposits, and frozen ground engineering.  He worked across much of the Canadian Arctic and subarctic, and also in the USA, parts of Europe, on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in Antarctica. He is well-known as the author of the textbook The Periglacial Environment and for founding the journal Permafrost and Periglacial Processes.

Contributions to this session are welcomed on subjects that were examined by Professor French during his career, especially from those who worked with him directly or knew him personally.

A Special Issue of Permafrost and Periglacial Processes is being prepared as a permanent memorial to Hugh.  Those who wish to contribute to this special issue must contact the editor of PPP, Mauro Guglielmin, before October 31, 2019. However, an abstract can be submitted to this session without a manuscript being submitted to the journal.
