Session description (250 word maximum in English):
Aufeis are the phenomena found in all permafrost regions. It is important to understand how climate change impacts aufeis formation. Variation and changes in aufeis extent can be assessed using remote sensing techniques, whereby aufeis dynamics in remote areas can serve as an indicator of changes in permafrost, geological, and hydrological conditions that is otherwise difficult to observe.
Unlike glaciers, sea ice or permafrost, aufeis have not been in the focus of international scientific meetings for a long time.
The main objective of this session is to bring together the researchers studying different aspects of aufeis, including:
- the theory of aufeis formation and development;
- the patterns of formation, distribution and dynamics of aufeis in different environment;
- the role of aufeis in hydrological processes, aufeis as the indicator of groundwater recources;
- aufeis and landscape formation;
- the controls of aufeis development (climate, geology, permafrost, etc.);
- aufeis hazard and engineering applications;
- remote sensing of aufeis.
