Session description (250 word maximum in English):

Arctic permafrost thaw promotes the release of previously freeze-trapped soil organic matter (OM), nutrients, and pollutants. While gradual active layer deepening slowly changes constituent fluxes in permafrost ecosystems, abrupt thaw events such as thermokarst, retrogressive thaw slumping and erosion of river banks and coasts can rapidly mobilize large quantities of sediments from deeper permafrost. This has great significance for permafrost-carbon-feedback considerations and for the ecosystem response to increased OM, nutrient and pollutant supply. However, the fate in the aquatic environment, during lateral transport towards the Arctic Ocean via small streams and large rivers systems or as direct input to the nearshore zone remain insufficiently understood, both in terms of their climate warming potential and their possible impact on marine biogeochemistry and biological resources.

We invite submissions that aim to determine the type, composition and rate of material released to Arctic freshwater and marine ecosystems as well as their fate within the land-ocean

continuum. We specifically welcome contributions that deal with:

- Mobilization of permafrost OM, nutrients and contaminants via thermoerosion and abrupt permafrost degradation,

- Leaching and biogeochemical degradation studies in disturbed terrestrial landforms and within aquatic systems such as creeks, rivers, lakes or nearshore coastal waters,

- Role of terrestrial and marine environmental factors on OM stabilization or degradation (e.g., plant productivity, species composition, photo-degradation, mineral protection, priming, etc.),

- Improvement and updates of Arctic carbon and nutrient fluxes and budgets. We encourage submissions examining (?) bulk geochemical parameters (e.g., POC, DOC, DIC,

nutrients), as well as isotopes, pollutants, and biomarkers.
